Perak Museum is located opposite Taiping prison. It was built in around
1883, ordered by the British Resident of Perak, Sir Hugh Low and the main building was completed only in 1886. Other parts were added later when the collection of historical materials and artifacts increases.
It has a mixture of English and Moorish design and is the oldest museum in Malaysia. The first curator was Leonard Wray Jr who was a botanist and geologist. Now, it displays zoology, ancient weapons, oboriginal artifacts and economy.
However, when I went over with my course mate recently, everything was closed except a small zoology section. I was pretty disappointed. I think they should have done the renovation section by section.
Outside the building in the compound, there are some old historical items like cannon, aeroplane, old train coach and a statue of Robert Sandilands Walker, erected for his contribution for settling disputes of Chinese and Malays, building a good team of Malay States Guides and in sports.
Lastly, kindly help keep Taiping clean by throwing rubbish into proper place.
