Chinese New Year in Penang, Malaysia is celebrated by all chinese Malaysian. It is a cultural celebration and therefore regardless of their religion, they will still celebrate this day. The difference would be that muslim chinese and christian chinese will not have prayers like the other chinese people. Chinese New Year is celebrated starting from 1st to 15th of the first month in chinese calendar. During this period, 'ang pau' / 'red packet' will be given by married people to children and to unmarried people.

However, for the toaist and some buddhist, before the reunion lunch (as what my family does) or dinner, they will pray to their ancesters. This reunion lunch / dinner is done the day before Chinese New Year. Because of this, those cooking their own food for prayer will have to prepare the food the day / night before reunion day. For those not praying at home, the reunion lunch / dinner will usually be held at some restaurants.

On the eighth day of Chinese New Year, the hokkien people will go to pray the Jade Emperor until very early in the morning of the nineth day. On the fifteenth day, the chinese association in Penang will hold some events and shows for the 'tim kam' day, a no longer practised tradition.

The first row photos show the food 'offered to ancester' for prayers cooked by my mum. The left centre photo is in the living room. The last row photos are in the dining hall. The left last row photo is prayed every 24th day of the last month according to chinese calendar. The right last row photo is prayed on every 10th day of month starting from 1st to 5th month of the chinese calendar.

I did not celebrate this Chinese New Year because my grandfather passed away last year. So photos of relatives visiting my family. Anyway Happy Chinese New Year / Gong Xi Fa Cai.
