Kelantan is a state located south of Thailand, north of Terengganu and east of Kedah and Perak. Its latitute coordinate is about 5o15'N and longitude coordinate is about 102o'E. Kelantan has population of about 1,635,000 million (2009) with majority of them Malays, chinese, thai and indians. Majority of its people speak Bahasa Malaysia / Melayu most of the time.

Kelantan has a land area of 14,922 km2. The Main Range (Titiwangsa Range) passes through the western side of Kelantan. This made Kelantan rich in flora, fauna and also natural ecological structures like caves, lakes and rivers. The jungle consists mainly of Tropical Rainforest and Mangroves forest. The main river there is Kelantan river.

Kota Bahru is the capital of Kelantan. I found the public transportation in Kota Bahru is not frequent. The frequency of buses is about one hour one bus. The exhaust emmission is tolerable and the fare is ok, according to zones. However, some bus drivers do not give bus ticket even after a passenger paid him. Taxis could be seen waiting near bus stands in Kota Bahru Bus Terminal.

The main bus terminal is in Jalan Bandar and the main bus that travels between districts in Kelantan is Cityliner. These buses are usually inter-town buses such as KB to Pasir Mas, KB to Tumpat area, KB to Pasir Puteh, KB to Machang, KB to Kuala Krai, etc. Though there are quite many buses, they have to cover all the districts. Outstation express bus terminal is near Tesco along Jalan Hamzah. The Langgar Bus Terminal for outstation bus terminal at Jalan Pasir Puteh is for Transnational Group only.

Traffic in Kota Bahru is quite heavy during going to work and back from work time. The main roads are quite wide, at least 2 lanes and some are one-way roads. There are not many motorbikes in Kota Bahru, unlike Penang.

The KTM railway track passes through Kelantan from Tumpat station at the north to Gua Musang at the south. Kelantan state airport, Sultan Ismail Petra Airport is located at the north of Kota Bahru town. Tourist can take the bus that goes to Pantai Sabak to go to the airport. Passenger ferry terminal to Perhentian Island is located in Tok Bali Jetty.

As for accommodation, I found that overall, Kelantan has the cheapest town budget hotels among other states' capital in the east coast. They can be easily found along Jalan Padang Garong which is just opposite the Cityliner bus terminal. I stayed in KB Backpacker Inn. One fan room cost me RM20 per night. However, the room has 2 single beds with no furniture at all. Other budget hotels and 1 or 2-stars hotel can also be easily found around Kota Bahru.

Kelantan is known as a cultural place in Malaysia. Its Thai-Buddhist influence is still very strong in Tumpat where many of the people can speak Thai and go to schools that teaches Thai language.

I went to Pantai Sabak because the bus to Pantai Kuala Pak Amat went that way. That bus driver did not know Pantai Kuala Pak Amat so I went until Pantai Sabak, passed by the airport. Pantai Sabak has no beach and the villagers told me that the peace monument in Kuala Pak Amat had fallen into the sea about 20 years ago. They also said that it was situated in Kampung Dasar and Sering no longer exist but already part of Kota Bahru area.

Nature lovers can get away to Gua Musang in the southern area where part of the National Park is located. Apart from jungle trekking, tourist can go boating along the river, caving in its caves and visit its Hot Springs.

Frankly speaking, I found it difficult to get special local food in Kota Bahru. I tried the Chicken Rojak and found it quite nice, not spicy! Fast Food outlets can be easily found such as Kentucky, McDonald, A & W and Pizza Hut.
